4 years ago I got a great deal on Musica unit which is no longer made by Olive. It was B stock and had a full warranty. Small 150 gb drive but it was a great machine that had a great sound. Internet Radio sounded wonderful also.
After three years, two hard drives and a fried motherboard it goes without saying that there was lots of interaction with service. These people were nothing but great to work with.
We learn first and formost to back the machine up. If there is a failure your ready to go when its fixed.
On the eave of my 50th birthday party the Musica stopped playing (the day, the Mus-ic-a died....)and my brother who admired the machine gave me that "whats that smell dude" look. You know, that smell when a piece of equipment dies?
Olive gave me a fair price to repair the unit. I had quickly reached the hard drive limit and contimplated expanding it, and fixing the motherboard but Olive made me a great offer on a new HD4 and I jumped on it.
If your hear reading this you know enough about the evolution of the machines from the opus/musica to the new units and enough about the machine to know FOR THE MONEY there is not many choices on the market. Since the new chasis has been out a few years and hundreds of blog conversations on the AVS forums I got quickly educated and felt good about moving forward with the new HD4.
The new Machine has been incredible and sounds great. The Maestro interface thru the computer is not perfect but works really well and they are working to improve it. You can create lists, edit, and make choices . They also have a way to replicate the screen diplay with function on your computer. I can also use an APP on my iPad to control it as well. There were times I got frustrated not understanding the language of the manual about newtorking the machine and simply called Olive and they walked me thru it. It was easy once I did it.
I read a negative reveiw of service on these pages and felt it no way represented my experience. Its always obvious ones words can speak volumes for themselves. Once in a while a machine a machine can be unstable. Sometimes its the user.
I'd love to say I never had any problems with my machines but thats just not my experience. But service were great to work with and enough for me to go back and get a new machine.
Read reviews on the machine and the AVS forums before you make this considerable purchase. There are minority negative reviews to digest. See if they make sense to you.
A music server is a luxury item but one that I have come to rely on very much for enjoying music. No more loose CDs lying around or having to look thru hundreds of cases to pick out some fresh tunes. Being able to buy music online and install it via my network is so easy. I can buy on E-music, iTunes or Amazon Mp3, down load into my itunes on my laptop, it will synch with my ipod, then drag it onto the olive.
Hard drives do fail but can be replaced (anticipate this with any computer!) so we back up about every two weeks after any changes or lists are made. Protect your time invested! I keep a dedicated back up just for this machine.
Why not give it 5 stars? Well even the new machine needed a repair but Olive service remained consistant. They paid for shipping and the unit was back in service in under two weeks.
Lets be honest, its about the music and this player is very smooth. Read the reviews by the experts.
I'd say 5 stars for sound. Makes my CD's sound wonderful! Sound is subjective, seek reviews.
3.5 stars for software. Room for improvement but what is the gold standard here? If its not Apple it don't get 5 stars.
Pending stars for durability. Needed to be sent back after 6 weeks. Been great for 6 months since. The longer it don't brake the more stars it will get.
4 stars fit and finish. Very solid case and more substantial than Musica.
5 star service!
Looks to me like a 4 star winner!
