The COOLPIX P500 is ideal for shooting high speed action, so you're sure to capture the fastest skateboarders, skiers and windsurfers. It's armed with ISO speeds up to 3200 and equipped with a five-way Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization System that reduces the streaky images associated with shaky cameras. The COOLPIX P500 even has a motion detector that identifies moving subjects and then adjusts the camera's settings to ensure that you won't miss a frame of the action.
Whatever you want to shoot, the COOLPIX P500 is ready.
You'll never miss a shot with this versatile camera because it starts right up, has a quick autofocus, and shoots five shots in approximately one second—at full resolution. Plus, multiple Continuous Modes allow for a variety of high speed shooting options up to a blazing 120 frames per second*.

When a single picture just isn't enough, the versatile COOLPIX P500 features a One-Touch record button that lets you shoot Full HD (1080p) movies at 30fps while recording audio with a built-in stereo microphone. It's great for sporting events because it will record high speed activity in slow motion, catching action missed by the human eye. The COOLPIX P500 also has an HDMI-CEC output for simple playback on your HDTV or computer—so now it's as easy to watch your own movies as it is to shoot them.

This review is from: Nikon COOLPIX P500 12.1 CMOS Digital Camera with 36x NIKKOR Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens and Full HD 1080p Video (Black) (Camera)
I had bittersweet feelings as I packaged this camera for return to Amazon. I really liked the pictures I took, especially those at a distance. The image quality is good enough for my purposes and for a camera in this price range. I like the size of the camera and how it feels in my hands. The autofocus is also good enough for the price. I really like the LCD function and "swivel"!
However, it has obvious issues with the battery. It would unexpectedly not turn on even though I was sure the battery was not exhausted. After charging for several hours, it would turn on but then I would get a "battery exhausted" message almost immediately on the camera's LCD. Once I charged it and took 10 pictures and a 1-minute video over the course of one day and the battery was exhausted. Removing and reinserting the battery worked a few times but not all.
I really need a camera that works when I need it to work. There cannot be any guesswork. So I had no choice but to return it to Amazon as defective. Amazon, as always, provides fast shipping and great service, so this is no reflection on Amazon. However, I am disappointed in Nikon. It's not normal for them to build and ship defective products. I wasn't able to get a feel for whether the problem was software, firmware or hardware related, nobody seems to know out across the internet either, and Nikon is still explaining it away as "operator error." Well, as a technology professional, owner of digital cameras since the mid-90's, owner of several Nikon and Canon digital cameras, and current owner of a Nikon D90 (which I love!) and a Panasonic Lumix ZS-7 (which I don't love but tolerate), I'm not amused when a camera manufacturer wants to call it my fault. Nikon, you need to do better. If you face up to the issue and fix it in future P500 productions, I will buy the P500 again.
