The next generation, with memories of valves dancing and hissing on stovetops, snubbed pressure cookers. Now pressure cookers have come back, those old valves replaced by modern versions that ensure safety while delivering the speed, ease, and nutritional benefits of pressure cooking. Pressure cooking also saves 70 percent of the energy normally consumed while cooking.
This heavyweight, stainless-steel beauty is a fine example of contemporary engineering and style. Its mirror finish gleams, and its black handles--including a loop handle for two-handed lifting--stay cool. Pressure-cooking traps steam to heat foods at temperatures higher than boiling. An aluminum disk in the base, sandwiched by stainless steel, speeds the process even more through fast heat conductivity. It's safe on electric, gas, ceramic, and induction stovetops. Little water is required, so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Vegetables emerge vibrantly colored from the steamer insert. Stews, soups, beans--even meat loaf, pork chops, and desserts such as bread pudding--come out tasty and nutritious. (A booklet containing dozens of recipes is included.) You can brown meats in the pot before the lid is locked on, or use the pot without the lid. The stem of the operating valve shows high and low pressure so you can adjust heat for different foods. After cooking, the pressure can be reduced slowly (just let the cooker sit for a while), normally (press the pressure indicator), or quickly (run tepid water on the lid's rim).
Safety measures abound: the lid twists onto the pot; a rubber gasket ensures a tight seal. A vent releases steam if pressure builds too high, as does a valve that also locks the lid when any pressure whatsoever is inside the cooker. Cleanup is a bit involved: hand wash the pot, gasket, and lid with a mild detergent, then lightly oil the gasket. Normally the valve is self-cleaning, but if food passes through it, disassembly is required. Minor cleaning inconvenience, though, should not overshadow the major convenience of pressure cooking. --Fred Brack

I bought the Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker after the New York Times called it 'the Mercedes Benz among pressure cookers'. And even though I haven't tried any other cookers (so I can't compare) I am totally happy with it. I'm actually spoiled, I got two of these! I use them all the time! I usually make recipes out of the cookbooks 'Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure' and 'Complete Vegetarian Kitchen'. Both books are by Lorna Sass. She is an expert on pressure cooking and gives a lot of nice helpful pressure cooking recipes, tips and charts in these books. If you want to buy a flame tamer for your cooker (highly recommended), please get the Kuhn Rikon one! It's a bit expensive, but the two other ones I tried ended up in the trash can.I also recommend buying an 'Ohsawa Pot'. When you make rice straight in a pressure cooker it is very sticky and can get stuck to the bottom. With this pot (which you place in the pressure cooker), you get absolutely delicious rice (especially brown and wild rice turn out great!).

I've never used a pressure cooker before. I had scary memories of a clanking, hissing monster in a German cook's kitchen. But the monster brought forth the best soup I'd ever tried, in very short order.
So I bit the bullet this year and after careful consideration of the alternatives, bought the WMF cooker. I've used their stainless and know them to be good.
This is one of the best kitchen aids I've ever purchased. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and it is preternaturally quiet. I watched fascinated as a small hiss from the front of the pot was abruptly cut off as a tiny ball bearing blocked the valve. Then a very large and easy to read indicator rose out of the handle to indicate pressure. Most of the barley soup was cooked with the flame actually off, since the well made and insulated pot didn't need a constant flame to maintain pressure. So I made a terrific soup in 20 minutes and didn't use a lot of energy to do so.
After the soup was finished I immediately gave away a very large steamer with an insert that weighed three pounds more; the WMF is such a high quality pot that it's possible to use it in the other capacities such as boiling and steaming foodstuffs. I think that I will get the alternative lid so that it's easier to do this.
The WMF cooker is a terrific buy. The 6.5 quart size is just right, too; large but not overpowering.

Great strides have enhanced the Duromatic since its inception in 1949. Swiss company Kuhn Rikon has made the pressure cooker quieter, safer, and a smart option in today's world, given how quickly it cooks and how much energy it saves. Pressure cookers are rapidly gaining in popularity, and this one is an exceptional model crafted in Switzerland. You'll find such foods as rice, grains, stews, poultry, and vegetables cook in just one-third the time of conventional methods, and retain vital nutrients. Choose from a variety of sizes to meet any household's needs. By saving 70 percent of the gas or electricity normally used in conventional cooking, the pressure cooker can pay for itself in just months.
The Duromatic is constructed of 18/10 stainless steel that encapsulates a solid aluminum core in the base for quick, even heating. Put in your ingredients (recipes are included), and the integrated lid automatically locks and won't open under pressure. A new generation spring-loaded valve uses red lines to show you at a glance whether the right pressure has been reached, and when cooking is done, you simply turn the knob for quick or slow release. Unlike old models, the Duromatic cooks quietly, without hissing, and five safety releases let you rest assured the pressure won't get too great. Kuhn Rikon covers the dishwasher-safe Duromatic with a 10-year warranty on materials and workmanship, and guarantees parts will be available for 15 years. --Ann Bieri

My Mother used a "jiggler" top style pressure cooker when I was a child. It was noisy, and I'm not really sure how she managed to figure out when food was cooked properly - a lot of trial and error that I can't remember. I was not sure what to expect when my pressure cooker arrived, but I have been amazed since I've been using it. Firstly, it makes virtually no noise at all - a huge change from my Mom's pressure cooker. Secondly, I can tell when I've reached the pressure that I want to use (there are two red marks - first one is low pressure, second one is high pressure) easily, and start my cooking time with great accuracy. I also really like just how quickly food gets cooked - using much less energy in the process! I'm also amazed at the taste - I really love potatoes, and this produces the best tasting potatoes I think I've ever had (or made!!!). It's a real pleasure to use such a well made and thought out cooking tool.
Overall, in terms of accuracy, taste, time and energy savings, I feel I've made a purchase worth my money!!

All-American 10-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner

All-American's 10-1/2-quart pressure cooker/canner holds up to seven pint jars or four quart jars. Only All-American pressure cookers/canners feature an exclusive, precision-machined "metal-to-metal" sealing system. Clamping locks align the cover to the base, forming a steam-tight seal. This means no gaskets to crack, burn, replace, and clean. At the same time, the metal-to-metal seal permits venting under unusual pressure conditions, making the seal safer than conventional rubber or composition gasket cookers.
Crafted of the finest hand-cast aluminum, this durable cooker/canner features a stay-cool Bakelite top handle, geared steam gauge, automatic overpressure release, and pressure regulator weight with settings of 5 psi, 10 psi, and 15 psi. The attractive satin finish is smooth and easy to clean. Double thick edges provide added protection on points of heaviest wear. The total measurements are 11-3/4 inches high with a 10-1/4-inch inside diameter. All-American pressure cookers are made in the USA. This cooker/canner is not suitable for glass or flat top ranges.

This is the second All-American I have (I have #921 - 21 1/2-Qt also), and I love it!

The smaller size means that it sits on top of the stove at all times, ready to be used. While making dinner on the front burners, I often have this canner working on the back burner. After we finally get up from the table (noone ever seems to want to!), depending on what I canned, but usually something that goes for 90 minutes at 10 psi, it is time to take jars out of the canner. There are some steps to do in between, but our table is in the kitchen, so I get up to check on/turn off burner, etc., while still being able to enjoy the wonderful conversation and shananigans going on at the table. Once the canner is cool, it gets a vinegar & soap bath (I have hard water), dried and put on back burner for next load, jars are on a towel ready to cool and seal overnight, and then be put away in the morning while the coffee is perking.

The smaller size means I don't feel guilty if I don't have two levels of jars to can (one on top of the other). If I only have 4 pints of picadillo to can, then I only can 4 pints, and no guilt about all that space being wasted. :-)

Don't get me wrong, I love my 921 also - I would not know what to do without it, but this 910 has just as much place in my kitchen.

Two lids, which fit both pans, are included--the pressure lid and a glass lid--so one pan can be used to cook under pressure while the other is used conventionally. Made of heavyweight, mirror-finish, 18/10 stainless steel, each pan has two handles and an aluminum disk sandwiched in stainless steel in its bottom to quickly and uniformly conduct heat.
Using a pressure cooker saves time and 70 percent of the energy normally consumed while cooking. Pressure-cooking requires little water so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Vegetables emerge vibrantly colored. Stews, soups, beans, even meat loaf and pork chops and desserts like bread pudding come out tasty and nutritious. (A detailed instruction booklet containing dozens of recipes is included.) Meats can be browned before the pressure lid is locked on. The pressure lid's valve stem shows high and low pressure so heat can be adjusted for different foods. After cooking, pressure can be reduced slowly (by just letting the cooker sit a while), normally (by pressing the pressure indicator), or quickly (by running tepid water on the lid's rim).
Safety measures abound for the pressure lid. A silicone gasket ensures a tight seal. A vent releases steam if pressure builds too high, as does a valve that also locks the lid when any pressure whatsoever is inside the cooker. Cleanup is a bit involved. The pans, gasket, and lid require hand washing, and the gasket needs a light oiling. Normally, the valve is self-cleaning, but if food passes through it disassembly is required.

When I decided I wanted to buy a pressure cooker I "shopped" here at Amazon . The reviews were a great help. The pressure lid works like magic. It's so quiet. I also like having the 2 pot sizes. The smaller one is great for quick-cooking grains and beans. The larger one is great for cooking larger quantities or larger items like corn on the cob. I just cooked up some rice for rice pudding. Only 5 minutes! A really nice product.

Thanks to this pressure cooker, and Lorna Sass's book Pressure Perfect, the staff at the drive through at McDonalds must be wondering what happened to me and my kids. I can have a great dinner ready in 20 minutes, even if everything's in the freezer. This pot has been a great size for cooking everything, and it still fits in the dishwasher. I wish I'd bought one years ago.

This review is from: Fissler 021 644 12 002 Blue Point Schnellkochtopf Set (Kitchen)
I got kind of caught up in thinking a cheap pressure cooker would do. Been there, wished I hadn't done that with other stuff. But anyway purchased this set, and at the price I considered the product needed to be premium. It actually comes also with a steamer basket and stand for the steamer basket that's not mentioned. For me it's turned out to be the perfect ensemble, giving both skillet for curries and one person meals, as well as a larger stock pot for stocks and larger meals. So it's really a six piece set, 2 more than the 4 pieces shown.

In the performance category it heats up very nicely and when I brown before pressurizing it cooks evenly. It's a great fit for small burners. Once heated up, it takes very little heat to keep it pressurized. On my induction range, the skillet will stay pressurized at a setting of 2.4 of 10 (on electric dial). The larger pot will stay fully pressurized from 3.0 to 4.5 depending on what it's cooking. When cooking lentils I like to cook them so they are thick when done, rather than soupy. In a pan with a flimsy bottom they can burn quite easily. But the dal comes out nice in the skillet and it's easy to tell the heat is being evenly diffused, no hot spots. But also, because it will stay pressurized at such a low heat, there is even less likelihood of scorching.

There is a stainless steel covered aluminum disk on the bottom so it does work well with induction. But also, pan has some heft and seems to insulate well so I can use the lower heat settings as already mentioned.

In terms of making stocks, I frequently make both chicken and beef stocks, and had been using an 8 qt dutch oven that I'd keep at around 5.5 out of 10 and let run for hours (up to 8). Now for chicken in 40 minutes and beef stock with roasted bones around 80 minutes. The chicken stock in particular has a very nice yellow hue that I'd never been able to obtain with the dutch oven. The beef stock gets much more gelatin than I'd ever gotten out of the bones with the dutch oven. Both stocks are the tastiest I've made when using the dutch oven (a heavy cast iron pot). So in terms of pressure cookers for stocks, this is a big winner. But I assume any pressure cooker will make a good stock. I've made several of the recipes in the included recipe book as well as recipes from another book and just cooked various curries and spicy lentils with no particular recipe.

The instructions are written in clear English and there are two booklets included. One of them has about 30 recipes including a couple put together just for this set of cookware.

I frequently will use both at once, cooking the faster dish in the skillet, then transferring the lid and covering the skillet with the glass lid and storing in a warmer drawer until the larger pot finishes. This has been a very efficient method to cook several dishes quickly.

The blue with white ring pop up is very nice and convenient way to see the pressure level. In particular with an induction (or a gas range I'm sure), it's quite simple to get it to a pressure you like or to keep it fully pressurized with just a little blow over. Very satisfied with that. The pop us is clearly marked so you can really set it at any pressure you want through adjusting heat level. Again, on an induction range this is very simple to do.

This pressure cooker is absolutely silent when you adjust the heat right to just let it have the slightest bit of blowoff, which comes out practically silently.

Cleanup. What can I say except absolutely simple and fast. Nothing to disassemble, you just clean it. The silicon gasket pops right out and back in with no fuss or muss. The nice stainless steel surface is holding up well (I've had the set about a month now and used it almost daily). No handles to remove and reassemble.

The set comes packed very well. No worries about damage in shipping. The knob on the glass lid needs reversed (easier to pack with knob in the convex side of the glass lid), but that takes all of one minute. The box is surprisingly sturdy. I'm keeping it to use for storage.

The construction of the pans seems top notch. Though the handles are plastic. I can envision that someone will put the skillet on a large burner and scorch the handles, but with an induction range, I don't have that concern. But I can say I use both pans on the smaller burners of my range, not the largest. Induction tends to work better with proper sizing. But because of the way the bottom is tapered, this does free up the larger burner for some other pan that needs more burner.

Overall, I'm happy with this purchase and the product. Given the results I've been getting and the ease of cleanup, the price hasn't bothered me either. Seems like a good value. Can't find anything to complain about, rather I'm quite excited about the new and better outcomes I've been getting with some dishes that I'd thought were already as good as they could be, but are turning out more flavorful and cooked in a fifth the time or faster.

I considered models like Kuhn Rikon, but think Fissler has them beat on ease of cleanup, and also think at best the Kuhn Rikon cooks the same as the Fissler. I have a Kuhn Rikon sauce pan and the bottom plate for heat diffusion is very similar however the Fissler just seems to be thought through a little better (it's ever so slightly curved on purpose so that when it heats up it's perfectly flat). Fissler calls the bottom 'Cook Star' technology, for better and more even heat diffusion. I suspect it would work very nicely with gas. The Kuhn Rikon bottom plate, in comparision is just a flag plate with the company name stamped in the middle (on my sauce pan, I don't have the Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker).

Fissler seems like it's new on the US market but it's clear they didn't just start selling product here with no forethought or business planning (like Mageplus with Spanish instruction manuals). Rather it's clear they've setup a US office and division to serve this market and guarantee at least 10 year part availability from date of purchase. Though I do wish we could buy the European market models that allow higher pressures. Maybe I'll pick up a lid when I'm over there next time. Anyway, even if they do stop selling here in the US for some reason (as in no one buys their product), there's still plenty of time to stock up on gaskets. But being silicon gaskets, they look like they might last for 5 years, even though Fissler recommends replacing after 2 years or 400 pressurizations. I've probably done 50 pressurizations on lid so far, and the gasket looks like new. When well made, silicon seems to last forever.

For me this pressure cooker set has worked out well. I can and do recommend it with no reservations. If motivated, I will update in about two years to give an update.

This review is from: Kuhn Rikon 3043 Duromatic 6.3-Quart (6-Liter) Stockpot Pressure Cooker (Kitchen)
I bought this pressure cooker from a local kitchen store (same price as Amazon) and love it. I had a jiggler type before and this changes everything. With my old PC I had to be very careful to add enough water so that it didn't run out. Also, foamy items caused problems by clogging the valve. The K-R maintains pressure not by a release but by temperature moderation. You can cook using very little water because the water has nowhere to go. Some of the highly rated, but less expensive cookers still use some steam release method, which is way worse. Since the steam is trapped inside the K-R the flavors and vitamins are as well, meaning you get tastier, healthier food.

It's a bit tricky to determine the right settings on your stove (ours is old and uses buttons, only 5 settings), but once you do the pressure cooker is super easy to use. I only used my old one for beans, but I have already cooked risotto (soooo much easier than the old fashioned way) and steel cut oats in mine. I haven't yet used it for meat or stock, but I'll do the stock this week. Edit: I have now used this to cook both veggie and chicken stock. I can't say that I'll never buy boxed stock again, but this makes homemade stock a simple and quick process. Any stock that you make at home is going to be much more healthy and better tasting than one that comes in a box. We will try to always keep some stock in the freezer for soup making, which can also be done in the pressure cooker.

The reviewer above noted the size issue. At 2/3 full (the limit) you'd have over a gallon of volume, which is a pretty big bunch of soup. At 1/2 full for rice or beans youd'd have 8 cups of either. This may not be enough for two nights for a family of 4, but it's nothing to sneeze at. As our kids get older, I can imagine adding an 8 or 12 liter cooker to the arsenal.

The Fissler 6.5 qt pressure cooker is a thing of beauty. It's heavy, shiny and detailed to perfection. I did look at a Fagor at Macy's and wasn't impressed by the edges of the lid; it didn't seem that care was taken in the construction. Deciding to splurge on the Fissler because of the reputation of the company, I have no regrets. You can download the manual from their site if you'd like to familiarize yourself with the instructions and features.

If you've never used a pressure cooker before, remember the I Love Lucy episode where Ricky exploded the chicken and have concerns--don't worry. They have been rethought and reengineered to prevent such incidents. They are simply a pot with a locking lid. If you can drive a car, you can easily do this. There is a learning curve, mostly about time. Get a good cookbook on pressure cooking--anything by Lorna Sass will help--they all provide charts giving you an idea how long things will take to cook. Getting a Flame Tamer will also help--that's a round piece of cast iron that fits over the burner, you'll put the pressure cooker on top of that just to make sure the heat is even and the pot doesn't scorch.

If the idea of cooking foods in about 1/3 the usual amount time appeals to you, you need this.

Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Anniversary 3.7-Quart Pressure Cooker

Product Description

, Berndes Tradition 7-Piece Set ,Wolfgang Puck Stainless Steel Cookware Set - 18pc ,Anolon Allure 10-Piece Cookware Set ,Le Creuset Classic Enameled Cast-Iron 6-Piece Cookware Set , Gordon Ramsay by Royal Doulton Stainless-Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set Product Description This 8-inch, 3-3/4-quart pressure cooker celebrates Kuhn Rikon's 50 years of making great pressure cookers. Like all Kuhn Rikon cookers, this anniversary edition quickly and healthfully cooks foods with trapped steam at temperatures higher than boiling. It's the ideal size for singles, small families, and vegetarians, and makes dishes for three to five people. Pressure cooking requires little water so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Made of heavyweight, mirror-finish, 18/10 stainless steel that won't react with food, the cooker has a stay-cool handle and an aluminum disk sandwiched in stainless steel in its bottom to quickly and uniformly conduct heat. A bright blue steam diffuser on the lid displays cooking times of 20 popular dishes. The cooker comes with a stainless-steel steaming trivet and a Quick Cuisine cookbook containing 100 pages of recipes and tips.
Kuhn Rikon Duromatic pressure cookers are designed with safety in mind. The automatic lid-locking device insures that no pressure can build up until the lid is put on correctly. The lid cannot be removed or come off until all pressure has been released. The cookers also provide the ultimate protection against excess pressure. The first indication that too much pressure has built up inside the cooker is the audible hiss as excess pressure is released through the valve. (When the user hears this, the heat should be turned down.) The valve will take care of any over pressurization by allowing steam to escape through the holes located on the valve stem. Additionally, another spring-loaded safety valve in the lid is set to release steam in case of a clogged main valve. This valve is not a "blow plug" like some old American cookers had, but a highly accurate spring-loaded valve that will open at a preset internal pressure and release steam safely and effectively.
This Duromatic pressure cooker can be used on any cooktop. It can go into the oven only at settings below 300 degrees F because of the stay-cool handle and valves. The pot is dishwasher safe, although the gasket and lid should be washed by hand. This pressure cooker carries a 10-year warrantee on all non-replaceable parts, material, and workmanship.

We bought one of these in 2001 to take on a long VW-Camper based trip. Its small size made it perfect for that. We still wonder why more people don't use pressure cookers when camping. The trip's long over, but seven years later the cooker, which we use at least weekly, is going strong with the same seal! Great size for a couple of servings of brown rice or other small dish.

It grills, sears, frys, saute's, steams, braise, and pressure cooks. This set includes the 1) pressure skillet, 2) the pressure lid, 3) wire basket, and 4) glass lid. The pressure skillets' 10.2" diameter and 4.2 quart capacity makes it versatile enough to cook smaller meals but large enough to handle family dinners too. The interior of the skillet features the Novagrill surface. The honeycomb texture keeps food from sticking with much less oil than convential pans. But unlike non-stick pans, foods come out beautifully browned. The Novogrill surface works in conjunction with the CookStar all-stove base. The CookStar base guarantees even heat distribution without hotspots. And the CookStar base means the Fissler Pressure Skillet can be used on any heat source, including induction ranges. The Blue Point Pressure Pan exceeds the minimum safety requirements of Europe and the United States with innovative features such as the patented Euromatic safety valve, residual pressure block, interlocking lid, and automatic steam release. These ensure that any excess pressure is automatically released and that the steam released is never hot enough to burn. Fissler invented the very first pressure skillet in 1969.

I recently purchased this cooker thru Amazon. First unit had a serious enough 'ding' which caused me concern. I requested a replacement cooker. Amazon cross shipped w/o any problems. Amazon took care of return shipping as well. Am very pleased with replacement pot and Amazon's service.

I purchased the largest model because it provides ample room for pot-in-pot cooking where I can use a stainless steel pot. The first dish I prepared was a huge batch of chili with dry kidney beans in under 90 minutes!

I was concerned that the large pot will require too much of a gas flame to maintain the pressure but that is not the case. Once the selected pressure is reached, it can be maintained very efficiently.

The metal-on-metal was also an initial concern but it works flawlessly. That is a big plus - no rubber gaskets and replacements to worry about years ahead. The pot is extremely well constructed. It is precision 'machined' on the inside making it very attractive. Minor con - the 2 canning racks that come with the product do not do the pot justice. They could be better.

WARNING - the pot is VERY substantial in size, girth and weight. Purchasers should take this into consideration beforehand to make sure they can handle, use, clean and store it readily.

I highly recommend Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry's product as well as Amazon's shopping experience.

, Calphalon Unison Nonstick 8-Inch , 10" Green Earth Frying Pan, The 10" Green Earth Frying Pan by Ozeri ,Lodge Logic 5-Quart Double Dutch Oven ,Circulon Contempo Hard Anodized Nonstick 8-Inch Review If cooking with a pressure cooker sounds old-fashioned, think again.
--Ann Bieri

I have two of these pressure cookers, the 2.5 L frying pan and a 6L pot and I use these routinely, especially the frying pan.

When I get home from work, I can fry chicken in about 10 minutes from the time it hits the grease.

I 'steam' potatoes (peeled and quartered) for 5-10 minutes, then use the cooked potatoes for mashed potatoes. Since they have never been immersed in water, they have the absolute maximum of flavor and nutrients. Everybody raves about these mashed potatoes, especially if they are made with something like Klondike potatoes. It just about as fast using the pressure cooker as it is to make instant mashed potatoes in the microwave.

I cook pot roast, chicken cacciatorre, stews, soups and especially bean dishes and brown rice. I turn the heat up to high until the second ring is exposed and then turn the burner down to the absolute minimum. It really does save a considerable about of energy and time. If you have a family of 4, get the 2.5 L frying pan. You'll never regret it.

Presto 8-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker

Product Description

, Circulon Infinite Hard Anodized Nonstick 10-Inch & 12-Inch ,T-Fal Specialty 4.5-Inch Nonstick One Egg Wonder Pan , Progressive International Microwavable Omelet Maker, Cuisinart Chef's Classic Nonstick Hard-Anodized 12-Inch ,Lodge Logic Pre-Seasoned 6-1/2-Inch Skillet Review Pressure cookers have experienced renewed popularity over the last several years because cooks have rediscovered what some cooks (particularly grandmas) have known for a long time--they're really fast. And it's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor. Presto's 8-quart pressure cooker is a multi-purpose pot that can stand in as a conventional soup pot as well as perform the kitchen magic that pressure cookers are famous for. Chicken Cacciatore cooks in 8 minutes! And it's big enough for home canning, too. (The USDA recommends pressure canning as the only safe method for low-acid foods such as vegetables, meats, and poultry.) This durable, polished-aluminum pressure cooker is an economical addition to any well-rounded set of kitchen tools.
The heavy-duty lid locks down during cooking; an inner sealing ring keeps the steam in. In addition to a pop-up pressure indicator and a simple steam release mechanism, there is an overpressure plug that will let off steam if it builds up excessively. This pressure cooker is useful for weeknight dinners or for any meal that needs to come together quickly. An accompanying booklet contains more than 65 recipes, ranging from basic soup stocks to stews and pot roast--even desserts like Oatmeal-Apple Crisp! Tenderize lean cuts of beef or pork; or cook chicken, fish, or vegetables faster than you can in a microwave, and without losing moisture.
Nonabrasive cleansers are best for cleaning this polished aluminum pressure cooker, though occasional use of a fine metal polish will help the exterior keep its shine. The Presto 8-quart aluminum pressure cooker is fully immersible; in addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 11-1/2 inches in diameter (17 inches including handles) and 9 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

I purchased a bunch of canning gear and as a result was entitled to an additional promotional claim, so I threw this pressure cooker in with it. What a great deal. I was impressed with the solid construction of this cooker, easy to use, nice features. Presto makes a newer one without the handle, but personally I think the handle is far more useful, especially for browning meat prior to pressure cooking, and the new one is priced at twice this one. I just made a batch of rice pudding in this thing, works great. I am looking forward to long years of service with this thing.

This review is from: Fagor 8-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker with Steamer Basket (Kitchen)
I received the Fagor Duo (8-Qt.) and it was indeed the stainless steel 'Duo' model and not the non-stick version some reviewers received. The handle was not broken (also as some mentioned).

After quickly perusing the instructions and included recipe booklet, I made risotto (cook time = 7min). It worked like a champ. One thing to remember is the little yellow pop-up indicator merely alerts you to when there is pressure in the vessel, not to when the unit is at 'cooking' pressure. So leave the heat on until you see a slow but steady jet of steam from the selector switch. This is when you turn the heat to low and start timing. On my glasstop stove at medium heat, it took another 2 minutes after the pop up to reach cook pressure. I could have heated it on high but I decided to follow the instructions for electric stove users (as my glasstop retains heat fairly well). Risotto turned out great, clean up was a snap. The only caveat about clean up is that the instructions suggest you coat the gasket with a thin coat of veg. oil every time you clean it. I did and it wasn't a big deal but it may be something easily forgotten in the future.

I like this unit and am now addicted to pressure cooking. (seriously, risotto in 7 mins! (cooktime) - kick ass!)

I bought this cooker last year. My wife and I cooked Thai curry many times and each time took us over an hour. Because we have to simmer with med heat until the coconut milk starts to break out with oil. This baby saves us time and energy. A pot of curry (for 4-5 serving) now took us only 15 mins. Great with stew also. We experimented with beef and ribs for BBQ (before grilling) on the 4th and it was very satisfying. Only hassle is that I hate to hand wash it afterward. But I guess same goes for any pressure cookers. Highly recommend it.

Had a previous 4 quart cooker for almost 25 years and used it a great deal. It finally got battered past hope and decided to get a new one. I chose to go to a 6 quart as I had some size problems with some recipes. It was a good move and I recommend this size to all. Cooker arrived nicely packaged, and in perfect shape. First use was flawless and it functioned perfectly on a Beef Stew recipe. I fully expect it last another 25 years. Presto may be less expensive than some, but it does the job well. PM

This mini canner is perfect for preserving jams, jellies and salsa. Holds seven pint jars. Comes with rack for easy lifting jars from canner. Granite Ware's high efficiency, quick boiling performance combined with its modest cost make it ideal for canning. The dark porcelain surface and steel core absorbs energy and evenly distributes heat to the contents. Porcelain enamel is the result of fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850 degrees Celsius. The powder melts and flows and hardens to a durable vitreous coating on a carbon steel core. It creates a smooth, hard finish that won’t burn and resists staining. It’s also non -porous so it won’t trap odors or food particles and provides a low coefficient of friction – meaning that it cleans up easily and, it is corrosion and chemically resistant so it will last a long time. When fired, the vessel is placed on pins so the bottom and sides are hardened during the firing process into one smooth laminated glass surface. You may notice slight pin indentations where the glass has flowed around the pin that supports the base during firing. The pin marks do not compromise the finish or performance of the vessel in any way but you should take additional care in handling if using on glass top stove. 11 1/2qt capacity.

This is for the home canner who wants to go a little slower.....not can so many things at a time. It's perfect for me and I love it. It fits nicely on my electric burner, and cans plenty of jars. It also holds the jars more securely than my big cannner did. I do mostly pint size or smaller jars, and a big canner just didn't hold the jars very securely, and the cannder itself didn't fit on the burner well. This is just right. I'm very impressed with it and would recommend it to anyone wanting to can on a somewhat smaller scale.

This review is from: Fagor 2-by-1 Splendid 5-Piece Pressure Cooker Set (Kitchen)
I am very frustrated with the customer service I've been shown. I initially contacted Fagor in March 2010 regarding a problem with my pressure cooker which I had been using for 1 month. I was told that they would replace the handle. More than 3 months later I have nothing. No fixed handle, therefore no pressure cooker. At least someone could have had the courtesy to contact me and let me know that I would not be receiving anything. Instead, when I emailed to inquire as to when the handle would arrive, I was told "next week". It's very hard to believe that Fagor is unable to get a replacement handle. I could have ordered one off the website myself, but I trusted that the company would remedy the situation., as they promised Now I'm stuck because I spent quite a bit of money on a pressure cooker that I thought was high quality, and I've been left with a regular sauce pan for months. How long must this go on?

If you intend to use this cooker every Thanksgiving holiday or something it'll suffice, but it is not worthy of regular usage. It a has flaw that will eventually cause it to fail and don't expect satisfaction from the warranty.
The purple plastic piece, that locks the handle on, sits on the rim of the pot and is directly exposed to the high heat and pressure. Over several years of moderate usage--Once every week or two for about 15 minutes under pressure at the lowest possible heat to maintain pressure--this piece melted and deformed. Finally the unit, no longer able hold pressure, ceased to function.
Though the warranty says "This pressure cooker is guaranteed to free from defects in material" I was very frustrated in dealing with this company in seeking redress. I suppose they do not have a real warranty, it seems to be just a sales hook. The person I dealt with was idiotic. This company showed to me that they are not interested in taking care of their customers or standing behind their products.

Presto 4-Quart Aluminum Pressure Cooker

Product Description

,All-American 10-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner , Fagor Futuro 5-Piece Pressure-Cooker Set ,Kuhn Rikon 3916 Duromatic Top Pressure Cooker ,WMF Perfect Plus 6-1/2-Quart Pressure Cooker ,Kuhn Rikon 3344 7.4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker Review Pressure cookers have experienced renewed popularity over the last several years because cooks have rediscovered what some cooks (particularly grandmas) have known for a long time--they're really fast. And it's easy to cook healthfully with pressure cookers, since the food retains so much more of its nutrients and flavor. Presto's 4-quart aluminum pressure cooker is a multi-purpose pot that can stand in as a conventional soup pot as well as perform the kitchen magic that pressure cookers are famous for. Chicken Cacciatore cooks in 8 minutes! This durable, polished-aluminum pressure cooker is an economical addition to any well-rounded set of kitchen tools.
The Presto 4-quart aluminum pressure cooker is fully immersible; in addition, the sealing ring should be removed after each use to allow cleaning of the inside rim of the lid. The vent pipe is simple to keep clean with a small brush or pipe cleaner, and both the air vent/cover lock and the overpressure plug are removable. The pressure cooker measures 9 inches in diameter (14 inches including handle) and 7 inches tall (including lid). Presto guarantees this pressure cooker with an extended 12-year warranty. A detailed instruction and recipe booklet is included; special safety issues that pertain to pressure cookers are clearly explained. --Garland Withers

I have owned and used 3 Presto Pressure Cookers in the past 35 years, they are the best! I owned another brand for a short time, it did not perform the way my Presto does, so I gave it away! I have never had any problem with my pressure cooker's, Presto is very easy to use, just be sure to use the right amount of liquid with whatever you make, after time you will be a pro and will be able to make up your own recipes, it is fast, and makes the most toughest cut of meat super tender! I usually cook my 7-bone roast for 45 minutes, and the meat just falls apart! Great for cooking Artichokes too, add 1 1/2 cups of water, your Artichokes, place the lid on and when the cooker comes up to pressure, reduce heat to a slow rocking (the pressure regulator you put on the top of the lid) and cook for 15-17 minutes depending on the size of the Artichoke, they will be perfect! Do your own experimenting and enjoy the cooker, you will be hooked just like me!

This review is from: Hawkins? Pressure Cooker, 1.5 LITER
I wanted to get back into pressure cooking after giving up on them years ago. I wanted more of a "pressure sauce pan" than a full sized cooker, since I only cook for my husband and myself.

The little Hawkins 1.5 liter cooked up a batch of beef stew with carrots in about fifteen minutes. It should have gone a bit longer - as the meat was a wee bit tough. The FLAVOR blew me away.

One of the advantages of pressure cooking I never thought about years ago is how energy saving they are. I was able to cook a stew in about fifteen minutes. I used way less energy than cooking a stew in a slow cooker or in a cast iron pot in the oven.

Oh, and a great cookbook of Indian recipes comes with the cooker. I just might get a bigger cooker just to experiment with those tasty recipes from all over India.

If you gave up on pressure cooking years ago, now is the time to get back into it. You'll save time and energy!

This review is from: Presto 01365 6-Quart Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker, Deluxe (Kitchen)
This Presto 6-quart Stainless Steel pressure cooker does its job well, it cooks food quickly and evenly, however the lid requires a considerable amount of force to open and the handles are not sturdy enough to hold up. After only about two months of use the pot handle is loose and sagging and has a crack at the base due to the extreme difficulty of opening this cooker.

Closing and locking this pressure cooker is no problem but getting the lid to open again is a serious chore. It may be that there is a defect with the cooker I received, but it is difficult to open this pot after it has been closed even if no heat has been applied. If you have cooked something it is just plane scary trying to wrestle this cooker open with several quarts of hot food inside. The manufacturer recommends applying a small amount of cooking oil to the edge of the lid to help with difficult opening but I have seen no improvement in the cooker's ease of opening after doing so.

I recommend that anyone who is interested in a pressure cooker explore other options from other manufacturers, especially if this will be your first pressure cooker. As for me, after the most recent ordeal this evening this cooker is going to the back of the cabinet and will only be used as a last resort.

This review is from: Fagor Splendid 10-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner (Kitchen)
Having cooked with pressure cookers regularly and successfully for decades, I am very experienced in maintaining and cooking with a variety of pressure cookers.

I treated myself to a stainless steel Fagor - my first Fagor (I liked the idea of the built in pressure device). Immediately I noticed slight burning in one small part, but I put up with it, and just had to use more elbow grease there whenever I cleaned. Then about a year later, after following one of their recipes, my cooker burnt out (interesting that this happened to another in comments too). This resulted in the dial melting - and of course a very messy pot - i.e. an unusable pressure cooker. Later, Fagor had the cheek to imply that the pot had failed because I had kept it in such a state! In trying to clean the pot, we noticed what seemed to be a through-and-through defect in the stainless steel - in the same place as the burn spot. It has been over 3 weeks since updating them on the latest find, yet they have remained silent, shunning me.

At least one of the recipes in the Fagor manual calls for the addition of honey AND ketchup. This is the recipe that saw the downfall of my pressure cooker. It is of interest that Snow White comments that these are a no-no in pressure cooking. You'd think that users are safe if they follow the manufacturer's instructions! However, Fagor have refused to admit any failure on the part of their recipes, or pressure cooker.

The company does not stand by its "10 Yr Warranty Fully Guaranteed Product". I photo documented the issues and sent them to Fagor - including Fagor's President (who never bothered to respond). They eventually offered a new lid ... but with a dangerous pot, it's not worth risking it. Clearly they do not care about customer satisfaction or safety, and do not see value in building up goodwill.

Stay clear of this company and its products!
(I cooked for decades with Prestige with no problems.)

I'm hoping this review will allow me to rate it zero, otherwise I will have to give it an overly generous '1'.

This review is from: Mirro 22-Quart Polished Aluminum Pressure Cooker/Canner (Kitchen)
I purchased this canner based on reviews I found here. It is off the mark...the specs says that it can hold 7 quart jars...it does not, it doesn't even hold 6...it only holds 5 (regular mouth Ball/Mason jars). Furthermore, their website has no support, cannot even find the canner listed there. That is a big sign to me that they have no interest in the customer...but only in making money (wearever ). I measured the inside diameter of the canner, it is 11 inches. I returned the canner and purchased the Presto 23-Quart Pressure Cooker/Canner for $3 more. It's inside diameter is 12 inches...it holds 7 quarts as it specs suggest. Also, the Presto canners base heating plate is offset/raised so that it can be used on flat top stoves without hitting the edge of the stove. Nice and well designed.
